Whether listening to your favorite song while commuting, setting the tone for a scene in a silver-screen thriller, or attending a concert for an evening out on the weekend – music is present in and a critical component of so much of life. It’s everywhere. We all enjoy the richness it adds to life. Learning to make music by playing an instrument brings an additional depth and also scientifically-backed neurological and academic benefits.

Presented by the Cornelius Youth Orchestras, the Musical Pathways Initiative (MPI) is designed to provide access and opportunity for elementary-aged students in our Lake Norman region to learn a musical instrument.

Absent a family’s ability to pay for private lessons, most students in this age group have little to no access or exposure to musical instruments, and almost all local school systems wait until 6th grade to give students the opportunity to participate in a band or orchestra class.

MPI will provide students in this underserved group with the opportunity to see and experience some of the area’s most qualified musicians perform and demonstrate the range of orchestral instruments in a fun and engaging assembly environment in their school. Additionally, all students will be invited to freely attend an Instrument Discovery Day where they can try all of the instruments under the guidance of those same professionals!

Meet the MPI Artistic Team!

The Musical Pathways Initiative is currently booking events at local schools. This initiative will fund a limited number of assemblies, so if you’d like to have MPI at your school, send us a message! Additionally, we welcome community members and businesses to partner with us on this initiative and sponsor a school assembly for $500.

MPI is presented and funded by the Cornelius Youth Orchestras (CYO) and its partners. The CYO is a local non-profit community youth orchestra serving youth across the entire Lake Norman region with music education and performing opportunities.
